Lawn Edging Installation Instructions

The following notes are intended as additional information to those printed in the RITE-EDGE literature. They are offered as a guide towards the successful use of the product.

Installation

Fully assemble the edging in the position where it will be required but on top of the ground, form all the curves, joints and corners at this stage. A light downward pressure on the RITE-EDGE or a spade will provide a mark in the earth where the edging is required.

Now put the edging just to one side and dig a small channel 10cm deep for the RITE-EDGE to be placed in. Check the edging height is correct at this point and adjust if necessary, it is recommended to have the top edge of the RITE-EDGE around 2-6mm above earth level for grassed areas.

Installation Step 2 Image With the RITE-EDGE now sat in the channel at the correct height and with the required shape, place the stakes into the edging at the pre formed locations. Once completely satisfied with positioning, Drive the stakes into the earth until they lock into the RITE-EDGE securely.

Now back fill the channel you prepared for the RITE-EDGE and compact the earth either side of the edging, simple foot pressure will suffice.

Finish the edging project by smoothing out the top surface of the ground at each side of the RITE-EDGE. Our experience has shown clearly that this installation technique provides a first class job every time in the minimum amount of time. Whilst on occasion the edging has been knocked down into the ground without first digging a channel, the finished job is not as good and it does take longer.

Joining

The most effective method is to use the unique Telescopic System inbuilt into each length of RITE-EDGE using the unique extruded shape. Each length has an interlocking profile, which simply slides into the subsequent length. The recommended overlap is 50mm this not only holds the two pieces together in a straight line it also allows for any lateral movement when the retaining stakes are driven into the ground securing the RITE-EDGE in the desired place.

Installation Step 3 Image

Where a flush surface is required it is recommended to join the two lengths together using an off-cut of approximately 100mm long thus allowing for a 50mm overlap on each length (based on this it is recommended that all off-cuts are saved from each installation). It is also possible to cut out the pre punched stake locations for use as joining pieces should a further stake be required for securing the edging.

You will be supplied with the correct amount of stakes to be placed in each pocket location along the lengths of RITE-EDGE

Bending

Due to the lightweight yet robust nature of aluminium it is possible to create bends in the RITE-EDGE simply and easily. Once the desired form has been established in/on the ground as outlined in the ‘Installation’ section above, the RITE-EDGE can be shaped to suit the required curves by forming round an object such as a tree trunk, a gate post or even a ‘knee’!

Sharp or acute bends/corners can be achieved by simply bending the RITE-EDGE over an object with a square/sharp edge such as a block of wood or the edge of a work bench. To make the bend as simple as possible, score the edging so that the score mark will be on the back of the edging when installed (i.e. lawnside). Line up the score mark with the object it is to be formed with, and with a firm and asserted effort, "fold" the edging on the score mark. This will cause the edging to go past its "point of no return" and from this point the bend will be more simple to achieve.

Some very intriguing designs have been created using Rite Edge and its popularity amongst many top designers and architects is growing rapidly, please visit our gallery to see some of these deisgns which show just what can be achieved.

Calculations

When measuring the site for the required quantity of RITE-EDGE to be ordered the following points need to be considered:

• Allowance for the curves and bends. Remember they are longer than a straight line when going from A to B.

• Allowance for overlap on joints – 50mm per joint. A box of 14 lengths of RITE-EDGE is 34.132 linear metres but with 13 joints is 33.482 linear metres.

• Allowance for extra material to provide off-cuts of 100mm long for flush fitting joints.
